Construction Progress - Part XIX

Construction continues at the MSU Surplus Store and Recycling center, as there have been some more updates to the exterior of the building as well as the interior. On the outside, work has focused on the completion of the roofing system (90% complete), the completion of the roof over the MSU Surplus Store vestibule entrance and the start of the water retention pond on the southeast end of the site. On the interior all the masonry work has been completed (only washing/cleaning remains) and much of the interior drywall has been finished in the interior office areas. The MSU Surplus Store and the MSU Storage areas now have paint on many of the walls. In the MSU Recycling processing floor additional floor drains have been added and temporary heat has been installed to start the pouring of the processing area's floors. Mechanically much has been completed as the power to the building has been completed and permanent power systems should be online shortly. Again the project is expected to be done in time for the beginning of the 2009-10 school year.

Remember to keep checking back for more updates! Also don't forget that we have a compilation of all of the constructions photos available. We would also like to thank Irish Construction Company who has been very gracious in allowing us access and keeping us up to date with the progress of construction.

Packup Pitchin Help Out Volunteers Needed

University Housing and Food Services needs your help.
Posted for H&FS Sustainability Contact Diane Barker

"Every year the residence halls has a mass exit of students during the end of finals week. All are anxious to exit and leave for home after finals. We try very hard to engage them to donate things for reuse or recycling through the annual Pack up Pitch In Help Out Program. To help with this program this year we are looking for Dock and Lobby Environmental Stewards..

Why: Great opportunity to Be Spartan Green, say good bye to students and parents, help the environment and participate in a community service event. We are looking for ways to personally engage students and parents in this area and feel we can make a bigger difference if we engage the students more directly.Personal engagement is the best way.. we need you!

When: Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of Finals week May 6-8, 2009 from10am-7pm daily, shifts can be split up with partners if you like...

What: We are looking for people to adopt the Residence Halls during this busy time and work to help Be Spartan Green.Dock /Lobby Environmental Stewards will oversee the back dock and front lobby areas, encourage and make sure recycling is being recycled and donations are being donated. Additionally, we will be directing people, like move in, to the proper locations to recycle or donate items and assist with dock and lobby area management ( recycling, donations, parking , non profit pickups etc. and helping our students move out)

How do I get involved?: Give Diane Barker your name, email and when you can work with times between 10am-7pm May 6-8. Diane will coordinate as schedule and assignments. It would be great to get some environmental stewardship engagement on this.... Let me know by March 20th if you have interest.

All Residence hall complexes will be looking for people to work during these times... so let me know if you or someone you know wants to assist from 10am-7pm Wed-Fri May 6-8..It is always fun to say good bye and to assist students, just like move in...

Thank you for your time and consideration and for being Spartan Green.

Construction Progress - Part XVIII

With the improving weather (temperature wise at least) work resumes on the exterior portions of the new MSU Surplus Store and Recycling Center. The screen wall that is located between the MSU Surplus Store/office area and the MSU Recycling processing area has started to go up. This wall will be a combination of brick wall and natural vegetation screening to separate the two areas of the complex. On the interior of the building HVAC and electrical continues to be installed through out the facility and the interior office areas have had their electrical and drywall installed. Hopefully with the continuing improving weather the floors should be poured in the Recycling processing area soon.

Remember to keep checking back for more updates! Also don't forget that we have a compilation of all of the constructions photos available. We would also like to thank Irish Construction Company who has been very gracious in allowing us access and keeping us up to date with the progress of construction.

REUSE, Save and Have Fun at a University Surplus Store

We’re trying something new. We think REUSE is very important to a sustainable future and want to promote the idea as much as possible. Squidoo gives us this opportunity. We’ve created a lens that provides information about college and university surplus stores all over the country. It shows a Google map of the different stores, links to web pages, eBay sales, etc… If you know of other surplus stores please drop us a line and we’ll add their information.
