MSU's Olympia Ice Resurfacer Finds A Good Home

Well, we can all say farewell to the Olympia Ice Resurfacer. It has found its way up north where it will be taking care of the ice at the ICE Arena in Mt. Pleasant, MI.
http://www.mpicearena.org/bluepumpkin/

The Olympia's career started in 1996 and has seen over 3,500 hours of ice time. During that time MSU has seen 3 regular season championships, 4 conference tournament championships and one national championship.

Along with all the many faces in the crowd watching with admiration, the ice resurfacer has seen many great players throughout the years and has taken good care of them all.

We were sad to see our old friend go, but we were given reassurance that she was going to a good home and will be taken care of with great detail and respect. Without a doubt, this awesome piece of MSU history will be missed around here, but you can always visit her in her new home.

Thank you for your many years of great service and best of luck in your new endeavors.

MSU Surplus Store and Recycling Center earns LEED gold certification

The Michigan State University Surplus Store and Recycling Center has earned the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design gold certification.

Gold certification is the second-highest designation offered by the USGBC. Two other MSU buildings have earned LEED silver certification: The Kellogg Biological Station dairy facility and the Chemistry Building addition.

Opened in September 2009, the center contains a number of green features, including recycled green glass, which is mixed in the concrete around the building. Rainwater collection provides 60 percent of filtered gray water for toilets, urinals and power washers. Rooftop solar panels produce 10 percent of the building's electricity.

"This was a fantastic team effort by all, and I want to thank our design and construction team for their participation, persistence, collaboration and continued support of the project," said Lynda Boomer, an energy and environmental engineer with MSU's Power Plant.

"I was very excited because all along we were striving for silver certification," said Chris Burns, construction manager for the project.

Burns said earning gold certification showed him that focusing on the additional details of the design paid off.

"It validated all the extra efforts we put into the project as a team. We couldn't have achieved it without each group stepping up and playing a role in the project."

Located off of Farm Lane on campus, the center accommodates three times the amount of materials as the former MSU recycling facility.

With its comprehensive design, the MSU Surplus Store emulates the facility's sustainable practices by encouraging faculty, staff, students and community members to reuse. The Surplus Store handles used university property from a multiple departments and facilitates sale or donation of materials, reducing waste.

Inventory includes items such as office and residence hall furniture, lab equipment and supplies, vehicles, computers, farm equipment and books.

A comprehensive recycling program, coupled with the facility, has allowed the university to expand recycling collection in 553 buildings on campus. The five target materials are white paper, mixed office paper, newspaper, cardboard, and plastics.

The 74,000-square-foot center houses the MSU Surplus Store, recycling operations, offices, and education center; storage areas for compost and metal scrap; a truck scale; and space for roll-off and semi-trailer storage containers.

In May the center earned the Recycler of the Year award from the Michigan Recycling Coalition, one of the state's top nonprofit groups working to advance resource-conservation issues.

Upcoming Vehicles and Used Car Prices

Some people have been asking us why our prices have been going up on our vehicles. Some might think it's greed, or that we do it because we can. This is far from the truth.

First our vehicles are still based on the NADA Trade-In value and we will continue to do so to provide a good solid car for a fair market value price. What has changed is the market for used vehicles. Cash For Clunkers removed a large portion of the used car inventory from the market and that coupled with current economic conditions has made more people to look for a good used vehicle and caused changes in NADA pricing.

With all that being said, here is what we will have for Tuesday, September 28 at 7:45 A.M.:

2006 Dodge Grand Caravan with 50,120 Miles; Stow-N-Go, $9,650 SOLD

Football Jersey Update

We've sold a lot of jerseys today. We'll be moving the jerseys that remain in store to our online catalog over the next 2 days with everything being complete by the end of the day Friday. If you click the specifications tab in the item listing it will show you what's available and what has been sold. We've received a lot of phone calls inquiring about number 53. We never received any.

For those interested in wearing a Michigan State University Authentic Football Game Jersey, here are some helpful tips to find your correct size.

  • Overall these jerseys are designed to be worn tight over the player, so most of the sizes equate to small or medium men shirts.
  • Generally speaking size 38 to 42 are smalls, 44 to 48 are medium and 50 to 52 are larges.
  • These number represent the circular chest length at the armpit level.
  • The jerseys have stretchable fabric that runs down the sides of the jersey that allow for expansion to fit larger while being held tight across the wearer. This is how large players can wear a "small" jersey.
  • Next the number are Three Letter combinations that represent the style of the arm of the jersey.
    • ##L is for linemen, which has shorter arms that are designed to hold and go underneath the shoulder pads.
    • ##QB is a standard size jersey but the elastic in the arms has been removed.
    • ##S represents the skill position jersey where the arms are a bit longer but still have elastic
  • Overall even the standard length jersey has substantial length to the bottom of the jersey that would allow for easy tucking in as desired.
  • Length +4 adds approximately 8 inches to the length of the jersey.

Thank you for supporting MSU Athletics and the MSU Surplus Store & Recycling Center.

Treasure Hunt

The MSU Surplus Store treasure hunt is not exactly geocaching, but it’s close. We are conducting a series of GPS oriented treasure hunts for gift certificates as a fun way to interact with our customers and encourage reuse of MSU owned property. The first treasure hunt produced a $10.00 gift certificate for the lucky winners who found it under a fallen tree in the Baker wood Lot. Clues for our second hunt were posted on Twitter Monday. A $25.00 gift certificate awaits the next person to follow the clues: $25.00 Gift certificate. N 42° 43.679 W 084° 28.759 Elev:865FT There are at least 38,000 miles of bike paths and trails in the U.S. Happy hunting!

Dan and Josh show off the DVD player they
purchased with their $10 gift certificate.
